What it is…
REFOCUS TOKENS™ is a unique, patented system designed to help your child develop a sense of personal responsibility and practice good behavior. This unique and easy-to-use tool allows you, the parent and / or caregiver, to address misbehaviors effectively and consistently. Many discipline options are limited and often result in tears or tantrums for the child and guilt or frustration for the parent / caregiver. The process of addressing a mistake can quickly turn into an emotional power struggle which overshadows the lesson at hand.
Unassociated punishments are not always effective as they often fail to present a connection between actions and consequences. Reward systems acknowledge good behavior but are inapplicable when bad behavior occurs. With REFOCUS TOKENS™ parents and caregivers can deliver a logical, non-threatening consequence in response to inappropriate behavior and help their child develop better decision making skills. For children ages three to ten, REFOCUS TOKENS™ turns discipline into a learning experience where everybody wins.
Why it works…
The effectiveness of Refocus Tokens™ comes from the way we learn and the way in which we present and cope with consequences. In families, like life, there are rules and boundaries. A parent / caregiver has the responsibility to help a child learn to operate within those boundaries and when the child challenges the perameters, the misbehavior has to be addressed.
Refocus Tokens™ is a tool that requires a physical and verbal action of the child. The act of physically moving the tokens from one cup to the other and reciting a phrase like “I will not hit others”, channels their physical energy into a task and draws their mental focus away from unproductive thoughts. Hearing their empowered phrase, which reflects the appropriate behavior, a child will be inspired to own the “better” thought and is more likely to fall back to the choice supported by the token phrase. The idea behind discipline, which is the core purpose of Refocus Tokens™, is to help a child learn to think BEFORE they act.
Refocus Tokens™ takes a child’s time which seems to hold more value than losing tv, video games, dessert, playtime, toys, etc… Next Refocus Tokens™ requires an action which assists them in venting and calming. The recital of the token phrase is the learning componant which leads to improved and more thoughtful behavior. With the exception of the first couple of times, a tokens session can be completed in 5-15 minutes and can be done in the car, at the doctor’s office, in the grocery store, at grandma’s house, with the nanny, etc… With Refocus Tokens™ your child will receive a consistent message no matter where they are or who is caring for them.
